Rape is a gruesome crime but why curse the entire nation?

The entire nation is shattered. This should not have happened. This is more dangerous than a terrorist attack where an outsider is involved, but this was done by our own people, son of our own soil.

Whatever happened in Delhi with a 23-year-old girl was a gruesome unpardonable crime, which needs to be dealt as per the law of the land. But the sad part is that the Law also need certain amendment to make them more stringent on such crimes.

People are protesting, people are showing their support for the victim who is still fighting the toughest battle, the battle to keep her chain of breath unbroken. But what disturbs me is the reaction of certain people who starts making demeaning remarks against the entire nation. Does a crime of few people mean that this country is not worthy to live in anymore? Why do we need to curse the entire nation for the misdeeds of some individuals? Blogs are filled with such cursing, they are stinking with hatred towards the country they live and its men in particular.

Yesterday, the great director Mr. Farhan Akhtar (I respect him a lot because he gave us a movie like Dil Chahata Hai) wrote a poetry which begins with, “What is this country that I live in?” The entire poetry reflected the pain he must be feeling while writing this. (It is different that the pain was only restricted during the time he wrote the poetry, he later must have enjoyed the premier of Dabangg 2 a lot. I seriously believe we need super cop like Pandey ji, perhaps then such crimes could be controlled). My question is why the entire country needs to be blamed for this. If you are sad and scarred in being a citizen of this country, which country would you like to be in.

Well I would like to provide some data. The data is compiled by UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). The following table shows the rape cases reported during a particular year and the their count per lakh of the population:

Nobody in this world could ever justify a gruesome crime like Rape. Perhaps, this is only crime where the motive and the view point of the criminal is irrelevant. The victim bears the pain for her entire life. But, it is done by one person and as mentioned earlier it should be condemned, why should we curse the country. We are very happy to follow the west in all aspect, look at the table, yes we are in hurry to touch them in this aspect as well. A country, which assumes itself as the boss of the world, could not control such crime.

There is one thing I would also like to highlight here. The rape in USA is reducing. It is a knows fact that the Americans are getting more and more influenced by the culture of the east, perhaps, it is one of the reason. But we are looking towards west and want to become like them, this may be one of the reason that such crimes are increasing though as a percentage they have remained at the same level.

The idea behind this post is to tell all those take such a incidence as an opportunity the vent their frustration by cursing the entire country, let’s not curse the entire country, our culture has protected us till now. Rather than cursing, we seriously need to introspect within ourselves.

  1. agree with most of what you have said ----and what I have noticed today is that the crowd which has gathered to demand punishment for the culprits is committing another crime --- they have started to become unruly --a demonstration which should have been peaceful is turning violent.
don't know how to put this in words but what is this mob mentality --- many of them who have gathered may not be serious about what there objective is its a bit like lets go where the crowd goes

quoting you ---Rather than cursing we seriously need to introspect within ourselves

  2. Well, Amit its not a single event which made people to curse the nation. It's a collection of event and the Administrations reaction to those event made some one to curse. People's Frustration and there helplessness made them to think so.
Look at the amount of tax we are giving and the kind of life we are getting. When you are compairing rape cases in India against other developed nation compare there living standard also.
A Open and Shut case in India takes years in Judiciary for decision.
Every where only Lip Service and no action. This Frustration and Helplessness is nothing but a curse to the nation and when it comes out it comes out dangerously.

    1. I agree with your points, but there are people on whom the responsibility can be defined. My point is why curse the entire nation, which includes all the good the other people are doing.

  3. Hi Amit.

    Nice blog. Thanks.

I want to point out that the statistics from UNODC contains, however, only the cases reported by the victims. Even though, the same reasoning applies to other countries, I imagine that we both would agree that the number of victims per 100,000 should be much more than what they appear in UNODC's data. For example, let 1 out of only 10 victims (to make the numbers worse) actually reveal that they have been raped. Nonetheless, it should be lesser than what is reported in some of the developed west!
